Farming and Alchemy

The farming system arrived in a major 2021 post-launch update and fundamentally changed how mid-to-late game resource gathering works. Instead of roaming dangerous biomes for berries and petals, you grow them at your base. The Frostbite Fortress expansion (March 12, 2026) added the Alchemy Bench on top of that, introducing potion brewing and elemental resistance buffs that are nearly mandatory for the game's hardest content.

This guide covers the full farming pipeline: Garden Patches, Orchards, crop timers, monkey automation, the Cooking Pot tech tree, and the Frostbite Fortress alchemy system.

The Farming System

Getting Started with Farming

To start farming, you need three things:

  1. A Flimsy Garden Patch - crafted at the Crafting Bench. This is where you plant standard crops.
  2. Seeds - obtained from harvesting wild plants, completing treasure maps, or trading with the Mysterious Stranger.
  3. A Watering Can - crafted and filled at a water source. Required to water soil after planting.

Place a Garden Patch, plant a seed, and water it. The crop grows over time and must be re-watered every in-game day or growth pauses.

Time Scales

One in-game day equals 12 real-world minutes. All crop timers are based on this conversion.

CropStationGrowth TimeYield
PetalsFlimsy Garden Patch2 in-game days (24 min)3-5 Petals
BerriesFlimsy Garden Patch2 in-game days (24 min)6-7 Berries
WheatFlimsy Garden Patch2 in-game days (24 min)3-6 Wheat
Sugar CaneFlimsy Garden Patch3 in-game days (36 min)2-3 Sugar, 3-4 Cane
tip

Petals are the highest-priority crop for early farming. You need three per Foul Meal, and taming monkeys is the backbone of your entire operation. A single Garden Patch producing 3-5 Petals every 24 minutes keeps your monkey recruitment pipeline running.

Watering Mechanics

Soil stays wet for exactly one in-game day (12 real minutes) after watering. When the soil dries out, crop growth pauses completely. It does not reset, but the clock stops until you water again.

  • Water crops immediately after planting.
  • Check back every 12 real minutes or assign a monkey to automated watering (see Monkey Training and Automation).
  • If you leave for an expedition, expect your crops to be paused when you return unless a monkey is handling watering.

Orchards

Orchards grow trees instead of ground crops. They are larger structures requiring a 3x3 physical grid.

Orchard recipe: 4 Wheat, 4 Cane, 4 Hardwood Slats

Tree TypeGrowth TimeYield
Coconut Tree2 in-game days (24 min)Coconuts
Fruit Tree2 in-game days (24 min)Assorted fruits
Cocoa Pod Tree3 in-game days (36 min)Cocoa Pods (for Chocolate Bars)
info

Hostile plant seeds (Venus Fly Traps, Swamp Bogs, Volcanic Spitters) can be planted in Garden Patches and mature in roughly 2 real-world minutes. These grown plants act as living base defenses, attacking nearby enemies. Plant them along your outer walls for passive perimeter security.

Farming Layout Tips

  • Place Garden Patches in rows with one-tile gaps for walking between them.
  • Keep a water source (or a pre-filled water chest) within a few steps of your patches.
  • Build a dedicated storage chest next to the farm for harvested crops.
  • Wall off the farm area to prevent enemies from destroying crops during raids.
  • Assign monkey haulers to move harvested crops from the farm chest to your main crafting area.

Advanced Cooking

The farming system feeds directly into the Cooking Pot, which unlocks the most powerful food items in the game.

Cooking Pot Prerequisites

The Cooking Pot requires:

  • 12 Pebbles and 1 Bucket to build
  • The Forge must be built first

Key Recipes

RecipeIngredientsEffect
Chocolate Bar1 Cocoa Pod, 1 SugarMakes tamed animals fall in love
Gourmet Pie3 Steak, 2 PastryFull health and hunger restoration
Slow Cooked StewAdvanced recipe+100 Max Health, +50 Max Stamina buff
PastryWheat-based recipeIntermediate ingredient for high-tier foods

Pastry-based recipes are the strongest healing items in the game. The Gourmet Pie fully restores both health and hunger in a single use. Stock up on these before tackling the Big Cat Labyrinth or the Frostbite Fortress content.

tip

Farming Wheat and Sugar Cane together gives you the ingredients for Pastry and Sugar, which combine into the best food items. Dedicate at least two Garden Patches to Wheat and one to Sugar Cane for a steady supply.

The Frostbite Fortress Expansion

Released March 12, 2026, Frostbite Fortress is a paid DLC ($3.99/€3.99) that adds an endgame layer on top of the base game. It introduces a frozen biome, a new labyrinth, frostbite-variant enemies, advanced equipment, and the Alchemy Bench.

Accessing the Frozen Biome

The Frozen biome is not reached by sailing. You must build a portal using a new blueprint found in your building tab. The portal requires Alchemy-related materials, meaning you need to have the Forge and some base-level alchemy ingredients before you can cross over.

warning

Many players assume the Frozen biome is another island you sail to. It is not. Build the portal from your building menu. The required blueprint should appear after purchasing the DLC and progressing past the Forge tier.

The Alchemy Bench

The Alchemy Bench is the centerpiece of the Frostbite Fortress expansion. It functions as both a potion brewer and an advanced resource processor.

Recipe: 10 Basalt Rock, 12 Hardwood Slats, 6 Glass Sheets

Prerequisites: Forge must be built first. Glass Sheets are forged from raw materials at the Forge.

What the Alchemy Bench Does

FunctionDetails
Potion BrewingMix ingredients to create potions granting elemental resistances, stat boosts, and unique buffs
Resource ProcessingConverts raw materials into renewable versions of metal, gold, basalt, brimstone, gemstones, and glowstones

Key Potions

PotionEffectPrimary Use
Cold Resistance ElixirReduces cold damage in the Frozen biomeMandatory for Frostbite Fortress exploration
Fire Resistance ElixirReduces fire damage from Volcanic enemiesVolcanic biome and labyrinth runs
Toxin Resistance ElixirReduces poison damage from Swamp enemiesSwamp biome exploration
Stat Boost PotionTemporary increase to health, stamina, or damageBoss fights and labyrinth clears
info

The biome resistance potions from the Alchemy Bench are the key to the "Totally Buff" achievement. You need health, stamina, and biome resistance buffs active at the same time. Prepare a Slow Cooked Stew (health and stamina) at the Cooking Pot, then immediately drink a resistance Elixir from the Alchemy Bench.

Resource Renewal

One of the Alchemy Bench's most powerful features is turning finite resources into renewable ones. Late-game players often run out of metal ore, gold, or gemstones after extensive crafting. The Alchemy Bench processes common materials into these high-value resources, removing the need to scour every island for remaining ore deposits.

This is critical for:

  • Repairing elemental weapons (requires Refined Gems)
  • Crafting Gold Nails for Galleon repair
  • Producing Trinket components
  • Sustaining the 11-stage Galleon repair process
