Minigames (Patapon 1)

Patapon 1 has five rhythm-based minigames. Each one is unlocked by finding a special hat item during specific story missions. Minigames are your primary source of crafting materials, weapon alloys, and stat-boosting stews between boss runs.

Every minigame follows the same basic format: listen for the "HAI!" shout that signals your starting beat, then input rhythm commands to perform the minigame's task. Better rhythm means better rewards. All minigames operate on a distinct internal BPM that is completely separate from the main combat march tempo.

Scoring System

Minigames evaluate your inputs purely on timing accuracy:

Difficulty Unlock

You cannot immediately access the hardest difficulty for each minigame. The engine requires you to complete the current difficulty level with a flawless Perfect rating twice in a row to permanently unlock the next difficulty tier. Five of the original minigames (Ubo Bon, Pop Bean, Rumble Thump, Simmer Slurp, and Fwoosh Famooze) carry over to Patapon 2 with mechanically identical inputs.

Ubo Bon (The Tree)

Character: Pan Pakapon Rewards: Wood, Meat, Fangs, Hides, Bones

How to Unlock

Destroy the tombstone during the "Escape from Isolation" mission. You receive the Pakapon Hat, which unlocks this minigame back at base.

How It Works

You chop a tree by pressing buttons on the beat. Each successful hit knocks materials loose. The tree has multiple stages. Landing consistent Perfect hits progresses you through higher stages, which yield rarer materials.

Tips

  • Focus on maintaining rhythm rather than speed. The game rewards streak length, not how fast you press.
  • Level 3 and 4 materials (Super Cedar, Heaven Wood) only drop from the final stages. You need near-perfect runs to reach them.
  • This is your main source of wood-type materials early on.

Pop Bean (The Farmer)

Character: Fah Zakpon Rewards: Vegetables, mixed materials

How to Unlock

During the "Creatures of the Sand" mission, use the Rain Miracle. After the rain starts, defeat the purple snail (Gancheek) that appears. It drops the Zakpon Hat.

How It Works

You plant and harvest crops by following rhythm prompts. Seeds grow through stages based on your input quality. Fully grown crops yield the best materials.

Tips

  • Rain Miracle is required to unlock this minigame. If you have not unlocked Rain yet, you cannot get the Zakpon Hat.
  • The crop quality depends on consecutive perfect hits during the growing phase. Missing a beat resets the growth stage.
  • Vegetables from this minigame are used in the cooking minigame (Simmer Slurp) for stew ingredients.

Rumble Thump (The Mountain)

Character: Kon Kimpon Rewards: Ores (Stone, Hard Stone, Mithril)

How to Unlock

In the "Sandy Paradise" mission, defeat the Poocheek (a beetle-type creature). It drops the Kimpon Hat.

How It Works

You mine ore deposits by drumming in time with the rhythm. Each correct beat cracks the rock further. Deeper layers contain rarer ores.

Tips

  • This is your only consistent source of stone and ore materials outside of boss farming.
  • Mithril drops are possible on perfect runs but uncommon. Expect to replay this minigame multiple times for high-tier ores.
  • The rhythm in Rumble Thump speeds up as you dig deeper. Stay calm and focus on the border flash, not the accelerating music.

Simmer Slurp (The Cooking Pot)

Character: Rah Gashapon Rewards: Stews (stat buffs consumed before missions)

How to Unlock

In the "A World of Ooze" mission, defeat the Parcheek (a yellow crab-type creature). It drops the Gashapon Hat.

How It Works

You chop ingredients that fall toward a giant cooking pot. Press the button when the ingredient reaches the knife. The timing is visual, not purely rhythmic. Successful chops add quality to the stew. Missed ingredients reduce quality.

Only one stew can be active at a time. The buff dissipates immediately upon mission completion or failure.

Tips

  • This minigame is more about visual timing than pure rhythm. Watch the ingredient's position relative to the knife, not the background beat.
  • King's Stew and above provide a meaningful advantage in boss fights. Aim for perfect runs before any fight you are struggling with.
  • You need vegetables (from Pop Bean) and meat (from Ubo Bon or hunting missions) as inputs. Stock up before cooking sessions.
  • Stews are consumed after one mission. They do not persist. Cook fresh before every boss attempt if you need the boost.
tip

Save your King's Stews for boss fights and late-game missions. Using them on hunting missions or early story missions wastes the stat boost. A Basic Stew is fine for routine farming.

Fwoosh Famooze (The Anvil)

Character: Ton Kampon Rewards: Alloys, weapons

How to Unlock

In the "Search for a Lucky Star" mission, hunt while it is not raining. After completing the hunt, interact with Hoshipon after you obtain the Black Star. You receive the Kampon Hat.

How It Works

You hammer metal on an anvil to the beat. Each hit shapes the weapon or alloy. The quality of your rhythm determines the output quality. Perfect rhythm yields rare alloys (Hard Iron, Mithril, Adamantine). Sloppy rhythm yields basic iron.

Tips

  • This is your only consistent source of alloy materials outside of boss drops.
  • Adamantine requires perfect runs and some luck. Do not count on getting it every time.
  • Weapons crafted here can be better than boss drops for specific classes. Check the output before equipping.

General Minigame Tips

  1. Calibrate your audio. If your TV has audio delay, the remaster's calibration settings apply to minigames too. A miscalibrated setup makes Perfect hits almost impossible.
  2. Play minigames between missions, not just when you need materials. A steady flow of materials prevents bottlenecks when you want to create Rarepons or upgrade equipment.
  3. Higher-tier materials require near-perfect runs. If you are struggling with a minigame's rhythm pattern, drop down to Easy difficulty to widen the timing window. The material drops are slightly worse, but you will still get usable output.
  4. Track what you need. Before grinding a minigame, check what materials your target Rarepon or equipment upgrade requires. The Unit Classes and Rarepons guide has the full material table.
