Characters
Ball x Pit has 20 playable characters. Each one starts with a unique ball and a quirk that changes how your entire run plays out. Some fire two balls at once. Some let the AI take over. One converts the whole game into a turn-based strategy.
You unlock characters by finding housing blueprints during runs and building the matching structure in New Ballbylon.
Full Roster
| Character | Housing Blueprint | Starting Ball | What Makes Them Different |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Warrior | Default (unlocked at start) | Bleed | No quirks. No modifiers. A blank slate. |
| The Itchy Finger | Sheriff's Office (BONExYARD) | Burn | Scatter Aim (inaccuracy debuff), but double shot speed and full movement during autofire. The inaccuracy barely matters against large targets. |
| The Repentant | Haunted House (BONExYARD) | Freeze | Balls deal 5x damage per bounce. Projectiles pierce everything on the return trip but do not bounce again on the way back. |
| The Cohabitants | Cozy Home (BONExYARD) | Brood Mother | Fires mirrored dual projectiles in opposite directions. Base damage is halved to balance the double coverage. |
| The Embedded | Veteran's Hut (BONExYARD) | Poison | Infinite pierce until the ball hits a wall. Pierce is completely disabled on the return trip. |
| The Cogitator | Villa (SNOWYxSHORES) | Laser (Vertical) | Full AI autopilot. The game picks your balls, passives, fusions, and evolutions for you. You just watch. |
| The Shade | Mausoleum (LIMINALxDESERT) | Dark | Balls launch from the top of the screen instead of from you. Built-in critical hit chance bonus. |
| The Empty Nester | Single-Family Home (SNOWYxSHORES) | Ghost | Cannot spawn baby balls at all. Compensates by letting you fire multiple special balls at the same time. |
| The Spendthrift | Mansion (FUNGALxFOREST) | Vampire | Fires every equipped ball simultaneously in one burst. Leaves you exposed while waiting for them to return. |
| The Shieldbearer | Iron Fortress (FUNGALxFOREST) | Iron | Projects a frontal shield. Balls bouncing off the shield gain a stacking damage buff with no cap. |
| The Flagellant | Monastery (GORYxGRASSLANDS) | Egg Sac | Balls can bounce off the bottom of the screen. Massively increases sustained DPS but makes ball control harder. |
| The Juggler | Theatre (GORYxGRASSLANDS) | Lightning | Balls travel in parabolic arcs instead of straight lines. They cannot bounce until they hit the ground first. |
| The Tactician | Captain's Quarters (SMOLDERINGxDEPTHS) | Iron | Converts the game into a turn-based mode. You plan exact launch angles between each wave. Precise but slow. |
| The Radical | Campground (HEAVENLYxGATES) | Wind | Full AI autopilot for everything: movement, aiming, firing, and level-up picks. Basically an auto-battler. |
| The Makeshift Sisyphus | Rocky Hill (GORYxGRASSLANDS) | Earthquake | Cannot deal direct collision damage at all. Gets a 4x multiplier on all AoE and status effect damage instead. |
| The Physicist | Laboratory (FUNGALxFOREST) | Light | Applies a constant gravity pull toward the top of the screen. All balls drift upward regardless of launch angle. |
| The Falconer | Falconry Hut (HEAVENLYxGATES) | Lightning | Fires twin projectiles from two falcon units positioned on the far left and right sides of the screen. Added in the Regal Update. |
| The Carouser | Party House (VASTxVOID) | Charm | Returning balls orbit around you instead of stopping, dealing passive melee damage to anything nearby. Added in the Regal Update. |
| The Tunneller | NG+ Blueprint Drop | Variable | Balls ignore the left and right screen edges, wrapping around to re-enter from the opposite side. Added in the Shadow Update. |
| The Tiptoer | Biome Completion (+3 Dex via Building) | Variable | Grants stealth. Enemies cannot detect you up close. Heavy penalty to max health and strength. Added in the Shadow Update. |
Attributes
Every character has six attributes that scale as you level up during runs and through New Ballbylon buildings.
| Attribute | What It Controls |
|---|---|
| Endurance | Max HP. 1 point is roughly 10 HP. Hit zero and the run ends. |
| Strength | Base damage before crits, ball multipliers, or passives are applied. |
| Leadership | Max baby ball count and baby ball base damage. |
| Speed | Projectile velocity and your movement speed. |
| Dexterity | Critical hit chance and fire rate. |
| Intelligence | AoE radius size, status effect duration and power, and passive item strength. |
Characters by Playstyle
AoE and Status Effect Specialists
If you like watching the screen melt, these characters scale best with effects like Burn, Poison, and Earthquake.
- The Makeshift Sisyphus deals zero direct damage but gets a 4x multiplier on all status effects. Pair with Nuclear Bomb or high-tier Poison for absurd numbers.
- The Flagellant keeps balls bouncing longer by allowing bottom-screen bounces, which means more hits per ball and more status procs.
Piercing and Linear Damage
These characters want balls that hit as many enemies as possible in a straight line.
- The Embedded has infinite pierce until a wall stops the ball. Pair with Argent Stopwatch (150% damage on pierce, minus 30% per bounce) for a devastating combo since the ball never bounces.
- The Repentant gets 5x damage per bounce, and balls pierce everything on the way back. Great with high-bounce arenas.
Baby Ball Builds
Baby balls are secondary projectiles spawned by certain evolutions and passives. These characters make them stronger.
- The Cohabitants fire two balls at once, doubling the rate at which baby ball spawns trigger.
- The Falconer also fires twin projectiles from the screen edges, giving even wider baby ball coverage.
- The Empty Nester is the anti-baby-ball character. Cannot use them at all. Stay away from Brood Mother and Maggot builds.
Autonomous / AI-Controlled
For when you want to sit back and watch.
- The Cogitator lets the AI pick all your upgrades and build paths. You still aim and fire.
- The Radical goes further. The AI controls everything, including movement, aiming, and firing. You are a spectator.
Community Tier Rankings
These rankings reflect community consensus as of the Shadow Update. Patches can shift these significantly.
Tier lists are opinions, not facts. Every character can clear every biome. These rankings reflect optimal efficiency, not viability.
| Tier | Characters |
|---|---|
| S | The Itchy Finger, The Makeshift Sisyphus, The Shieldbearer, The Repentant |
| A | The Cohabitants, The Spendthrift, The Shade, The Embedded |
| B | The Radical, The Physicist, The Flagellant |
| C | The Cogitator, The Tactician, The Juggler |
| D | The Empty Nester, The Warrior |
Why The Itchy Finger is S-tier: The Scatter Aim debuff sounds bad on paper, but endgame bosses have massive hitboxes. You cannot miss. Double shot speed plus unrestricted autofire gives the highest raw DPS output of any character.
Why The Warrior is D-tier: No quirk means no scaling advantage. Every other character gets a multiplier, a unique mechanic, or an AI assist. The Warrior gets nothing, and that gap widens exponentially in later biomes.
